Indian Head Penny Value Chart by Year (1859–1909)

The Indian Head cent was struck from 1859 to 1909. Nearly every coin came from the Philadelphia Mint and has no mint mark — only the 1908-S and 1909-S were made in San Francisco (mint mark under the wreath on the back). The chart below shows the value range for every regular issue, from worn to uncirculated. Click any cell for the full page on that coin. ⚠ marks key dates.

Prices are guide values from the USACoinBook price guide (updated Feb 2026) for regular strikes; varieties and errors are listed on the individual pages. Early copper-nickel coins (1859–1864) are thicker and paler than the later bronze issues.

Which Indian Head pennies are worth money?

The famous three: the 1877 (the lowest mintage of the series — even worn ones bring hundreds), the 1909-S (only 309,000 struck), and the 1864 with the L on the ribbon. The 1908-S is also a key date — the first cent ever struck in San Francisco.

Beyond those, the entire 1866–1878 decade carries premiums because mintages were low, and error varieties like the 1888 8-over-7 overdate are worth four figures. Common dates from 1880 onward in worn condition are worth $1–3 each — see the individual pages below.
